Two weeks ago I discovered the handmaid’s tale on Amazon prime. Fast forward to two weeks later, I have finished all three seasons and dream about it on the reg.
There’s just something about this show that has me rooting for characters like never before while simultaneously being scared shirtless every episode. I think it’s the way none of the charecters are painted in black and white strokes. Every character is fleshed out and real with flaws and redeeming qualities and I’m not just talking about the protagonist, June. It’s the background every other character is given that makes this show so complex.
For instance, i go from hating serena in the beginning to sympathizing with her( the time she has her finger cut) to rooting for her( When the commander was in the hospital and Serena and June handled all the business) and now it’s back to dislike and although it frustrates me to see her like this, I get it. I understand the character development and that’s what makes this show so wonderful.
Aunt Lydia is another curveball. While I despise her blind faith in the ideology of Gilead, you still see how she does love all the handmaids in her own sick, twisted way. Ofcourse you see all this only because of how masterfully Ann Dowd plays this character.
Never the less, all this led me to ordering a copy of the handmaid’s tale to fill the hole in my heart, left by the season 3 ending. :’

And phew, what. a. book. Margaret Atwood is a true genius. She’s created this entire world of gilead, which is certainly a feat on its own. But the interesting thing is how the emotions that power the formation of this Country are emotions that are very much seen in people today. It scares me how well the the current climate of the world matches the book and so, what if Gilead was a real, plausible future? Brrr.
